You've just got to feel at ease with the person riding, and feel confident in them, and wholly trust them. If you don't, then the bike feels, and rides differently, it doesn't feel so smooth and the ride doesn't feel so solid, and the rider won't want you on the back very often.
The best thing to always do is RELAX, and to talk to other pillions about riding, and you'll soon pick up handy tips from them. I did and found that they helped me loads. :D
Would love to get my own licence, but prefer to be on the back and looking around at all the scenery we past, cos Mike misses so much when he is riding, and can be disappointed if he's missed something he was particularly looking out for.

Mel, she rides horses, which scare the bejesus out of me and I wouldn't even go near it. So I bet if she goes on the bike I'll have to ride the horse - eye for an eye an' all that. Anyhow, she won't go near the bike so I'm guessing I'm pretty lucky so far.

Don't let her near it Loris. :D :D Only joking. I like taking Mel on the back cos it's nice to have a ride together (yes I am taliking about on the bike   )

She's a brave girl mind, I would get on the back of me

cant help but have a little giggle at the sexual inuendo's lol

with my own licence i dont really go pillion much, but when i have i found the best way to hold on was:
one hand around the waist/tummy and the other on the tank,

this ment you have the tank hand to aid wen slowing and the tummy one for acelleration.

Hi Mel, welcome to the site
Having a 'misses' who also loves riding pillion, I have had to make a lot of compromises in my riding style and bike choice which has helped a lot with taking bike virgins out for a spin.
1, bought a vfr 800fi (not the vtec) great for long distances and very comfy. Also got decent grab handles and a great uncramped sitting position for the pillion. 2)got a tribo seat cover, a MUST HAVE - stops the pillion sliding their bum around ,therefore making them feel part of the bike as opposed to hanging on the bike 3) A decent intercom, being able to talk to each other realy puts a newby pillion at ease. 4) Have a grab handle belt which is easier to hang on to than trying to grab hold of my tight leather jacket.
A gentle learning curve for a pillion is much better and enjoyable for them; build speed up slowly, brake easier and earlier, slowly increase the lean angle. The pillion will then progress into a bike lover. :D
Too often I have witnessed girls getting off the back of their boyfriends gsxr/blade/ninja looking pale and shaking as they had never been on a bike before and thier 'loved one' has just tried breaking the sound barrier on one wheel 'as a laugh'.
Oh well, rant over
Ride safe, might see you around then fellow Axminsterion

Sorry screwed the last one up. Anyway intercom, screw that  Someone told me they got an intercom so could talk to the Mrs. Cost him loads cos he ended up putting her through her test and buying her a bike cos he got fed up with getting it in the ear all the time.

It's a shame MIke won't get an intercom, cos there's been so many times when we've tried communicating whilst on the bike, but beeen unable to hear each other. But i suppose I would keep on in his ear if he did, so I'm not really sure about the answer to that 1!!!!!

The only time i get it in the ear is when I take my eyes off the road to look at the local scenery (especially the short skirted, skinny topped or bikini clad variety of 'birds' ).

Mike would understand what you mean there, cos he's always bird watching when he's out and about, and I always moan at him for doing it.

hi ya, welcome to the site.

have to say, putting a pillion on a bike is like sticking a caravan on a ferrari, you know it can do it and has the power to cope.

thing is it just takes all the fun away from owning it.
