am I missing an obvious lack of mechanical maintenance in the pictures, or is it just the dirt and road grime that people are on about? If its just the dirt I don't see how you can come to the conclusion that he doesnt look after it just cos its dirty, especially if its actually getting used through the winter. besides, I dont see any bashes or scrapes or anything - few hours with degreasant and a bit of autosol and it would be gleaming again - until it gets used next.
anyhow, anyone who spends hours meticulously cleaning and obsessively polishing their bike has issues, and should get out more imo

i cant believe the 'can of worms' this has opened. it seems that the care/condition of a bike really is a passionate one on here-thank god !
this thread wasnt meant as a dig on the whole aftercare of bikes after they had been sold, more of a view on how different people look after their bikes, i know some are obsessive about theirs and some are just happy that they run.
i iknow i would probs fall into the former of these two groups but have alway found that if i look after/clean my bike it hasnt die on me, i tried the 'leave it and run it' method once and the bike lasted 2 months

I like to keep mine as clean as pos. If you don't things start to corrode and when you do get around to it it's harder.
Also think of cleaning your bike not just as cleaning your bike but a good chance to check it over.
However I'm glad that people don't look after their bikes because I'd be out of work

Lol...As others have said, I ride my bike every day, not clean it every day and just stare at it. It gets me around, I do regulary check oil, chain tension/lubricate etc. Cleaning the bike in this season is not done so often, the 3 bikes I have had before this one were cleaned nearly all the time in the summer because of the nice weather to do so rather than freezing your b*llocks off in the cold.
You haven't seen what it's like now since the day you saw it
