Yep, I use Tesco furniture polish on my lid and bike ( after using turtle wax or other on bike ) and no probs so far! Use RainX on my visor after washing with warm water but really need to sort the anti fogging. I'v used various de- misters but cos I wear glasses the visor is fine but my bins fog up! Bugger!

Pledge and or Mr Sheen are what I use top stuff, has never caused a problem on paint or plastic on my bikes, even shines up the Ricket 111 a treat. I do my visor with it too carry a can and rag in my pannier ;)
You would be surprised at the people I have converted whilst staying here when touring France ;)

I use pledge on my wheels and my helmet, I did once on my visor, all I could see was the reflection of my face, was scarier than my riding, NEVER again, loads of my mates use it and swear by it!

use the ol mr sheen on my superduke which has a matt finish and it seems to work fine and is easier to clean afterwards as well, i do all the plastics, engine and exhaust as well. no probs. also do my leathers with it to help keep em waterproof. job done

I am a Mr Sheen man even stops your boots squeeking ;)
I have been using it for decades sometimes I don't even wash the bike first just spray and shine off. keeps the Rocket looking good too...
I do have to buy it in the UK in Bulk though as the french spray equivelent stinks and when you clean your helmet you don't want it stinking now do you...

I think the best advice when using a household polish, would be to limit yourself to only using it occasionally and do not spray directly onto the bike or helmet.
Using a soft cloth to give it a bit of a polish, I don't see how this is seriously going to damage your bike. You go out a ride through dirt and gravel which surely would cause much more damage then spraying some ordinary polish on it. I have found with the helmet visor, it does help to leave a protective layer meaning cleaning off bugs is much easier.
If you are worried about using polish and your bike is too precious, then simply don't use it! But in the long run, your bike will get damaged and using a small amount of polish on it isn't going to make much difference.
