Well thats ok in most situations, but i can be commuting at 0330 in the morning, and my folks may not be able to hear the phone, so rather than leave people in the dark I have a number with people on the end that get paid to be awake throughout the night, and it doesn't cost me anything to make extra ICE entries in my contacts list, just in case they did check it out. :)

I still maintain that calling someone is more appropriate at a time when your condition has stabilised rather than at roadside. The only time you may need something like that is when unable to give instructions at which time calling someone other than next of kin is useless as they're not legally able to carry out decisions and advance derictives. The ICE number could get in contact with your next of KIN, but do they have the number and in all honesty the hospital will be trying to do that anyway. Most hospitals have contact details due to electronic recording systems such as epex, but that depends on when you last went doctors or hospital.
