Yes, I heard stories on those lines too.

My old Fut gets me around 46 mpg all day every day, no matter how hard it's abused; seems the Old School V twin rotax still scores highly, even today - one of the reasons a gen' 2 Tuono appeals.
Wasn't keen on the gen2 tuono I rode. Front end felt tippy & nervous, motor felt flat compared to the TL. Wasn't a fan of the riding position of the SD either. Bars too high, feet & arse too far forward for me.

My advice would be plenty of test rides. What suits one person can feel completely alien to another. You didn't give a budget - 3 or 4 cylinder MV Brutales might be worth a look .......

How do you know this? Doesn't it need to be getting a drive from somewhere to give you figures?

Ahhh, that was back in nineteen-hundred-and-frozen-to-death, when the the world was young and the speedo' worked. I can still get 220 miles from a 21 litre tank so the old girl ain't doing too bad.

The 22 year old 1200 Bandit gets a similar mpg. Doing 205 miles on a 19 litre tank with just a few cups remaining, when I attempted this just the once.
So 10+ miles per litre regularly (46-48mpg).
The bike is a peach to ride, smooth, comfy, glitch free acceleration in any gear. What's not to like?
It's not a modern bike yet it uses the same tyres which probably wear at the same rate and it's too heavy.
Probably all large bikes suffer the same weight penalties, so no gain in changing bikes--- unless you know different.

The bike may be good but I am the fly in the ointment; I would surely not be confident to take the race track route. I like the roads and the lines can be different, which I enjoy.

Bike good. Me not.

Back to the original thread
This is my plug for inline fours, but hey all bikes have their benefits.
Probably best to work on size of bike.
Small singles
Medium twins
Large inline triples and fours.

Plenty of information to think about cheers. Unfortunately the budget doesn't stretch as far as a MV as they're gorgeous bikes. Will get some test rides arranged soon and see which feels nicest

In '81/82 that one turned my 12" to jelly. Faster than my mates kettle, but he didn't break down with a broken crank!
