ZXR 1st to 2nd crunch?..

When i change from 1st to 2nd the gears crunch like i'm not using the clutch and feels like im just grinding at the teeth each time. Sometimes at 5-7000 revs it'l change very smoothly and won't even seem like it has.. but most of the time if your accelerating hard its rough from 1st to 2nd and is a struggle to mak it smooth..
I've heard a couple of other ZXR riders mention it and aparently 'most of them do it'. And when I asked why.. the answer was "it's just something to do with the gearing"..
Any ideas? Thanks, Tom.

check your clutch cable tension
check your oil level
check your oil condition
how many miles has it done ? could it be the springs are fooked ?

every bike i've ridden (which is only 4 if i'm honest, and 2 of those were for doing my test) has crunched a bit going from 1st to 2nd, my thundercat is horrible, feels like the gearbox is going to fall apart, the triumph is better but it's still not as smooth going 1st to 2nd as it is through the rest of the gears. it's just something a lot of bikes do, cos they have to go through neutral

my ZXR750 L3 crunches a bit between 1 and 2, I can`t clutchless shift between them, just put it down to the fact that its a ZXR, they do seem a bit raw and crude

Most bikes will clunk when going from 1st to 2nd gear, there is a much larger gap between the two gears as neutral is in between them, you don't need to worry about it unless it starts to be a problem getting it into 2nd gear, or it becomes really difficult to select neutral from first.
Kawasaki also have a detent lock out which prevents 2nd gear being selected until the output shaft is spinning, so you can only select 1st from neutral when standing still. Sometimes the 3 detent balls get a little gummed up especially if oil changes have not been done regularly, which can make 2nd gear selection a bit notchy. If this is a problem then push some flushing oil through the motor which will help loosen the deposits that gum the detent balls up.
