Tyre choice

Gonna order some new rubber this week . Bearing in mind it's being used to commute most days as well as riding about odd weekends whats best. Been quoted £266 for Michelin road pilot 3 fitted or £244 for bridgestones Bt023 :?:

This months Bike magazine notes that Michelin have released the Pilot Road 4 tyre and it has 20% longer life than the pilot road 3 plus some other improvements. J

Mileage wise there won't be much in it. Managed 7000 miles or so out of the rear on both of those. PR3 will be the better wet weather tyre, BT 023 are a tad sportier, although I took my BT023 off the front as I never got on with it.PR3's move about a bit more on the road due to the extra sipes but apart from that and a slower turn in due to a shallower profile I can't say I've seen a bad review about them. They wear very fast once they get near to the end of their life. I preferred PR2's to the 3's and for me a PR2 on the back with a power 2CT up front seemed pretty spot on. Michelin Power 3 are getting good write ups too with good wear. Depends what mileage you want from your tyres.

I'm on Avon Storm 2's. Very good wear, not quite as sporty as the Michelins but good in the wet as well.
They also come with a warranty in that if you get a puncture during the first few mm of tread you get a new tyre gratis.

I'm running metzler roadtec's on my firestorm at the moment, as most of my mileage is commuting and two up at the weekends.No complaints so far

What is Merv ? How do you find the DIamonds ? Mixed reviews elsewhere.

Merv is my blue trumpet 1050 that's in my signature. I like the diamonds but they are more sporty than tourer. Good grip and quite cheap. It's the first rear tyre that I have worn out the sides before the middle.

Just to put my tuppence worth in, I went from Maxxis Diamonds on my Gixxer (older model mind) to Bridgestone BT 021's, I personally felt the BT's were so much better than the Maxxis, grip was good, even at lean angles and I found the turn in transition was a lot smoother then on the Maxxis, which always felt a bit sudden in the transition from upright to lean and made the front a bit twitchy at speedier bends. It might be down to my riding style and age of the bike though, I know Goaty is very happy with his Maxxis.

To be honest, I find myself thinking tyre choice is more down to personal preference than marketing blurb and rubber technobabble. If you can afford to try different brands at tyre changing time, then I would say try something different from what you last had ( brand anyway) and then decide if you prefer one over the other, on your bike, riding to your style. Either way modern tyres are so good these days you'll be very unlucky to choose really crap tyres ;) !

Think your probably right. For day to day use going back and forth to work most modern tyres should be ok. I read some reviews and as scorcher said the pr3's apparently move about quite a bit on the road which i didn't think i would like so i went for the bridgestones. Sure they will be alright but if not then yeah just try something different next time around.

Only rode to work so far - about 17 miles in the wet so taking it steady on them for the next few miles but feel ok so far.
