Financial Help...

Post by TheDangerousQuietOne »

Morning all. I'm hoping a few people on here have experience of what I'm going through atm.

Basically, my landlord for next year is one of my friends parents. They have bought a large house for 8 of us to live in. They had problems with the purchase and so didn't tell us how much they would be charging us until approx 4wks ago. Then they dropped the bombshell that the deposit would be £325 as would each months rent. They want the deposit and first months rent (£650) before we move in in 2 weeks. I also have to pay the uni £350.

Ever since they told us this I have been going into my two banks, NatWest and Halifax to try and get the money. Unfortunately because I'm a student Halifax immediately said "NO" to everything straight off. NatWest refused me this morning because of a low credit rating eg. I have no regular income as a student. They won't give me a penny.

Now I have to somehow guarantee the money by today or my landlord will find someone else for the house and with the shortage of housing down here I'll be living on campus for the next two years :?

From the 1st July I will be working on campus earning approx £250pw AFTER tax so paying back money over the summer is not a prob. However, my question is, where can I get it in the first place??

I could:

a) sell my motorbike, it's worth approx £1200 except atm its MOT is nearly up and the chain and sprockets need replacing to get the MOT, needing approx £150-£200 to do this. I'd be lucky to get £800 atm. It will also take several weeks to get the money through.

b) beg my landlord to let me move into the house having given them £0. I can tell you now this won't work.

c) find a local loan shark....

d) kill myself...JUST KIDDING!!!!

So what can I do?? Any quick fix suggestions??
The dumber people think you are, the more surprised they'll be when you kill them.

Behind every happy face is a life of pain...

Sell the motorbike to me, I have no money though so I'll take it off your hands for free....sell the bike. With that amount of earning you could always buy another one and one for me aswell.

You won't be paying tax if your a full time student when you earn?

Also, is no1 offering Student loans, with low interest etc, they have different acceptability criteria, may need a parent or guardian for a guarantor though.

Student overdraft is interest free, will have to pay tax on earnings over a limit even if you're in full time education.

Bank of mum and dad is always good

Or sell the bike i'm afraid mate, if you can speak to the landlords nicely and wait til you have your student loan.

Find other student letting, what uni are you at?

I know its hard, but, maybe the bike would have to go, but it depends on how desperate you are to move out of campus.

if you need cash fast, the only way to get rid of the bike and get cash within say 7 - 10 days is ebay the only problem with that is, you wont get what you think the bike is worth, only what other people think the bike is worth if ya know what I mean.

Its hard decision time

£335 for a student house is robbery mate, you better be getting a palace or something. Im paying £260 a month and its a really nice house.

you'll only have to pay national insurance on your wages, which for me atm in a similar situation is about £5 quid on every £100 i earn, barely noticable :)

maybe at they are parents friends there might be a bit of wiggle room, still really shocked about the price, how nice a house is it?
i dont have a drinking problem.......if anything, i'm too good at it

I'd tell them to F off. You could probably get a one bed flat for that with change and you wouldn't have to share. £335 may not be a high rent price but you'll be sharing with 7 others. That means they're getting £2600 in rent a month  Does that include water, council tax, electric etc?

Living with that many people you might as well stay on campus

I am at uni too and i know what you are going through. I am after a bigger bike now.

What bike do you have, i may buy it off soon if it is the one i want and it has good history.

Regards

A.Thomas

P.S. I would ask your mum/dad/uncle/grandad for a short loan tbh. It may be even interest free.

£2,600 ... you can rent a mansion for that!!!!!

And if they're going to be unhelpful after leaving it until the last minute to tell you what the rent will be, how difficult is it going to be later on? Friends' parents - they'll probably come round each week and check you've cleaned the place properly

You'd be better off finding somewhere else and, if you can, borrow the money for the deposit.
my mind not only wanders ... sometimes it leaves completely

yeah, as most people say - better to have a shitty house and a nice landlord than a shitty landlord and a nice house. These certiantly sound like they fit into the later category

can you get a career development loan at all? not sure about the eligibility criteria, think it might have to be a vocational course, but might be worth looking into

whilst it sounds like these people are taking the piss in general, a months rent as deposit and a month up front seem to be the norm for renting though. saying that my gf was sharing with 5 others and paid about 240 deposit and 240 a month up in cardiff

Hold on £325 a month x 8. Is that what they are after? or is it £325 divided by 8 of you?. You didn't make that clear.

Exeter uni campus quarters are great mate. So i wouldn't knock them till you tried them. I deliver to them all the time and can't get over how lucky they all are. Women on tap to AWESOME BABY
