I agree to some extent that anyone buying a bike either privately or from a dealer should check out a bike as much as they can. However, the whole idea of buying from a dealer & paying the extra is that you have the peice of mind that if something goes wrong you are covered, otherwise there's no point in going to the dealer at all!!!
You've got to admit, if you bought a bike from a dealer (or person in the trade so to speak) & it developed a problem, then when you took it back they said "tough luck mate" you wouldn't be too impressed with the service.

yeah true but your not talking a £5k firblade here, the sold as seens are peices of crap that they dont want but need to part x in to sell the £5k bike, theyre doing the guy a favour by taking a bike no-one else would touch(private ortrade) and he gets his new bike and they get the sale, its a vicious circle and a hard market place
they then sell the sold as seen on to you with you with no mot or tax so is as such unroadworthy and your responsibility to get i taxed and mot'd so if you buy a dud tough $hit basically.
if its a decent bike and comes fully road registered then you should have warranty although i thought it was only 3months on used vehicles. if he has a problem he should go through the not fit for sale route and go to court on that. unfortunatley theres some idiots out there who dont know what theyre buying/bought until its too late

You have a point if we're talking about a £500 bike you're going to expect that it won't be perfect & may even have some problems. But not all of the bikes appear to be crap, I've seen some on their website going for around the £2k mark. Now that may be small change to some folk, but there are still a fair few people that will consider it alot of money.

Don't you think it would be a better idea if they were to state what the problems were (if it's got any)? Most breakers appear to do this when selling on crash damaged bikes. At least that way they wouldn't be accused of being dishonest, & at least the customer would know what to expect.

Is it any wonder that people distrust dealers (car or/& increasingly bike) when that happens?
Not everyone is mechanically minded & knows what to look out for when looking at a bike. When dealers start treating the customer with contempt in that way all that happens is that they get a bad rep & people stay clear. Hardly good for business eh?

The problem I have with them in this instance is that they have sold a bike to a cosutomer that doesn't know anything about mechanics and bought a dud that was sold to him as a good quality roadworthy bike and was charged top whack for it (£2k from a family with 2 sproggs under 5 and not much dosh as it is). Now I'm all for making decent money in a decent manner through decent deals, but this has taken a leaf from the architypal american car sales man and his underhanded narcicistic techniques for stripping the poorer folks of what little cash they have and hang the consquences.

Sorry, another rant over. I know you like being fair to all men Deej, but this is not something I'm going to be swayed over !!!!

no worries mate,im not argueing with you as i know how honest you are, thats why i said for him to go down the not fit for use route in the courts. im sure i heard about this bike from another dealer the other week, hope the guy gets it sorted out.

the sold as seen is tat and crap that no-one else wants or bikes that could cause problems down the line. i wouldnt touch them myself but not everybodys in the same position.

anyway how was the open weekend, did anyone go. whats peoples impressions of it ??

I would tend to agree with you as I do give a vehicle (bike or car) a good going over if I'm looking at buying. However, think about it from the point of view of if you were new to bikes &/or had little if any mechanical knowledge. You'd be a bit miffed buying a bike thinking you'd had good advise/deal from a trader, then a short time later to find it's got problems that will be costly to sort out & the trader isn't interested.
Implying that someone who isn't mechanically minded is a fool because they went to a trader for advise, but got shafted (as it appears has happened with AbWill's friend) is a bit unfair.

i cant comment on the friend, not seeing the bike advertised etc etc..
if it was sold as seen, it implies it could run or could not run..
might have unseen problems, bent crank etc..
if it said sold as seen on his invoice.. he should of noticed..
maybe questioned it,
im not entering the arguement, just stating the service i have recieved has been good.
would like to know the out come of this one though..

every tim i have ever been into speed i have noticed the bikes are clearly marked and the customer have been clearly told what's what.
sadly the end of the day some people just go ahead and buy somthing thinking thay know all about it and kick scream and cry when thay dont get what thay had hoped!
it doesent mater where you go someone has got soming bad to say about them all.

Cheers Deej. Yeah, am Westcountry Fine Foods now, Order decent food from me all you chefs out there !!!!!

Anyhoo, was working at that damned MV place in Exeter, from where I have taken voluntary redundancy due to the money troubles they have had lately, that and I was the only one at the time who had another job to go to!!!! But I agree, you can find nightmare stories for any bike shop, although I am proud to say that my work as a mchanic never came back and if it did only came back for people who's wiring didn't match the picture in the Haynes manual (Like the plug Deej?? !!)

Speed in my opinion have been overzelous in making money off customers. They will happily take money from strangers and hang the consequences instead of looking after customers in any sort of responsible way. My opinion perhaps, but I am free to express it just like any of you!!! If you wanna have a go feel free. I'm a big boy now and I can take it !!!!

As for that MV place, Good luck to them, they're gonna need it !!!!!
