How old is your lid?

Post by JohnBob »

If you've got more than one (especially if you still use it) poll for the oldest one.

Poll and post up what make/model it is, i'm looking forward to those that might still have an old school late 80's early 90's knocking around etc.. or if you've kept hold of an old faithful.

I've not been riding for long so nothing retro or old school for me; Arai Chaser matt black iridium blue visor.

Cheers in advance ladies & gents.

1991 Shoei X8R Rainey Rep. Replaced by a couple helmets now and no longer used but I can't let myself throw that particular helmet away!

Currently use Arai Astro R (with subtle light tint visor), Roof Boxer V and an AGV/Fox Moto-X helmet.

Current Shoei XR900 is about 7yrs old now and needs replacing ....... I've also got an AGV Quasar that's about 12-13yrs old, and a Shoei GRV thats about 17-18yrs old.

I haven't got any of my old Bell helmets - I had an original Star which was a car racing helmet with a little "letterbox" visor opening, a Star II LTD (which was a lovely helmet) and a Tourstar (which wasn't quite as nice as the StarII) as they got thrown out when I moved 6 years ago :(

Oh, and out of all those helmets, all but the Quasar have been plain gloss black

We also have the wifes Arai (Giga I think :? ) which is about 16 yrs old and in the lovely "benetton" colours of white/turquoise/purple/gold

HJC HQ-1 Lordship Carbon Fibre.

I buy a new helmet every year.

My previous lid was an HJC. The Visor realease system on them is amazing.

yeah, so amazing that when you have an accident the visor pops off and smacks you in the face, which hurts :(

I have the HJC FG-14 in black. Couldn't afford the carbon fibre one but when it is time to replace mine I think I may go for it. I like HJC, they have the pinlock system like arai helments and the mechanism is good but I thought it was standard on most lids. I have had mine for 2,5 years.

What is wind noise like? Is the weight saving a big deal?

I was told that you should have a lid for about 3 years if you use it all the time due to UV breaking down the shell, 5 years if you use it occasionally (like me.) I have replaced the visor and the pinlock insert a few months ago.

Do you collect your old lids moose?
Blue Sv650s Curvey - Now unrestricted but starting to find the suspension a problem.
Next bike: CBR600RR eventually.

No, just not got round to throwing them out. They're in the cupboard under the stairs, somewhere

That used to be the case (and still may be), but for the old thermoplastic helmets rather than the glassfibre/carbon/kevlar composite ones. If you work on that theory should all Lotus Elise/Exige owners replace their body-shells every 3-5yrs :? Of more issue is the time spent in use, as this is what causes the lining/padding inside to compress, the helmet to feel loose & sloppy, and reduces the protection the helmet affords. Although it's a few years old, I don't reckon my helmet has done more than 10-12k miles  thus will have seen less use than many on here only a year or two old.

As an aside, when I bought the helmet I also bought an iridium visor to complement the clear one that came with it, and I am still using the same two visors (though the iridium now has a couple of scratches in the line of vision and needs replacing
