I've got to echo that, i was going down the M3 and then the A303 once and was following a police bike. I learnt alot about smoothness and he kept on egging me on. It was a real experience.

A few years ago, Bike magazine got a group of riders together on fast bikes on an off road circuit.

They consisted of a few fast civvy's - journo's and a racer.

Plod on Pan was quicker than all of them except the racer, and even he admitted that the copper was suprisingly fast on his two wheeled barge.

Must have ploughed it's own furrow - can't see a pan surviving very well off road, and equally can't see how that equates to on-road performance :?

Yes thankyou for pointing that out for the, erm, less bright among us.

That is exactly what I meant.

I wouldn't have though that would have needed elaborating on but there ya go.

It was interesting to see a few misguided sports bike riders get hammered by a dayglo wearing copper on a fully laden Pan, but that is exactly what happened.

I've got the article somewhere and I'll try and find it.

Unfortunately, a lot of sports bike riders seem to think that having the latest in two wheeled technology complete with matching lid and leathers makes them a fast rider by default.

I have a friend who used to go to track days on an old BMW R1100RS (untill he fell off a ladder), and completely stuff a lot of these people who thought they were a bit handy.

He had a couple of sports bikes as well but never took them because he said it was such a laugh seeing these people get so pissed off that they'd been burned by an aged tourer.

What counts is the rider, more than the bike.

indeed but there are limits ...

that guy sounds like a pretentious ass to me...

im sure if you where an ok rider you could show some of the the sportsbike guys in the novice or lower end of the inters group on a trackday a thing or two on a pile of s hit beemer.

but in the advanced group not a chance in hell, the bike is to much of a disability and just to slow. My guess would be that someone who took pride in stuffing guys on sportsbikes on their crappy beemer was just another IAM clown who wasnt half as good as he would like to think.....so rather than field one of his sportsbikes and get royally stuffed in a higher group he would wheel out the cruddy beemer and ride around with the beginners revelling in his superiority

NOT AT ALL - PETE IS A GREAT BLOKE WHO ALSO HAPPENED TO BE A DEMON RIDER - PUT HIM ON ANY BIKE AND HE'D RUN RINGS AROUND MOST PEOPLE

im sure if you where an ok rider you could show some of the the sportsbike guys in the novice or lower end of the inters group on a trackday a thing or two on a pile of s hit beemer.

but in the advanced group not a chance in hell,

PETE WAS ALWAYS IN THE FAST, EXPERIENCED GROUP ON ANY TRACK DAY HE WENT TOO.

the bike is to much of a disability and just to slow.

YES IN THEORY YOU ARE RIGHT, BUT THE REALITY IS THAT MOST SPORTS BIKE RIDERS (THOUGH NOT ALL), ONLY THINK THEY ARE FAST.

FAST RIDING COMES DOWN TO COMPETANCE - THERE IS MUCH MORE TO IT THAN JUST OWNING A FAST BIKE.

My guess would be that someone who took pride in stuffing guys on sportsbikes on their crappy beemer was just another IAM clown who wasnt half as good as he would like to think

HE WAS NOT IAM - JUST A BLINDING RIDER WHO PROVED IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN BY STUFFING PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO THINK THAT ALL THERE IS TO FAST RIDING IS HAVING A FAST BIKE AND OF COURSE, THE LEATHERS AND LID TO GO WITH IT.

.....so rather than field one of his sportsbikes and get royally stuffed in a higher group he would wheel out the cruddy beemer and ride around with the beginners revelling in his superiority
READ THE ABOVE.

YOU REALLY MUST GET OUT OF THIS MINDSET THAT HAVING A FAST BIKE IS ALL YOU NEED.

IT COMES DOWN TO ABILITY.

A BETTER RIDER WILL ALWAYS BE QUICKER, NO MATTER WHAT :D

Sorry Andy, but you just seem to be trolling for reactions sake now ...... in this and other threads

I'd like to see your "mate" keep up with a (even badly ridden) gixxer thou over a reasonable distance whilst riding a CBR125

Yes, a good rider will make up for a poor machine to a degree, but he is also likely to be far nearer (if not over) that machines limits and thus at (or is) far more risk to/from other road users as there is less margin for errors in his manouvre's.

There's a big diffeence between better, faster, or safer - you can often have two, but not always all three

Either way, we all seem to happily accept that your hard riding cop mate is indeed a god, and on his day is quite capable of beating Rossi even whilst riding a crappy old Bimmer  :D

I think it's more about generalisations rather than individual differences and with that I'll say that 'generally, police motorbike riders have significantly more ability than riders within the general public'.

Of course this is a hypothsis but one I think would prove valid.

im struggling to get my head around how anybody could wheel out a turgid bmw tourer and run in an adavanced/fast group at a track without being a mobile chicane, the pace would be way beyond the bikes limits regardless of the rider. and the thing is on top of that there are always people faster than you anyway ....and in the advanced group those guys faster than you are also going to be on machinary fit for purpose. Sorry I have to call bullshit on the riding god and his beemer in trackday fast groups showing up the sportsbike riders - Im afraid its just not realistic.
