NEW hobby for NEW year

Post by Blimey »

I didn't state what it was in the title as i know it wouldn't get a very big response if i did.

Its an odd one but as a few of you know i like bit of the fizzy stuff at weekends so i was thinking of saving some money and start making my own (preferly red) WINE.

Now the reason i have posted this is for help, leeds, recommendations of types, web sites, supplyers etc etc. Anything that will get me started on the right foot.

If things do get going well, i will of course offer the 10% discount to paid up SWB members.

Oh and i need this to work as wife thinks its another one of my 5 minute wims

My parents and grandparents make there own red wine.. and we grow the grapes in our garden.. takes ages though!! I know very little about it, I just liking drinking the stuff.. :D Its different.. I'm usually a valpolicella or chianti man.. :D Wine lover at 18, brilliant, being Italian parents encourage drinking of wine with meals etc.. so been drinking wine since I was very little.

I used to brew my own.

You can buy kits and brew them, thats probably best for a beginner.

Keep it clean and follow the instructions. It should come out OK. at least as good as cheap suppermarket wine.

To get used to it stick to the kits. Find a smallish shop that deals with homebrews and can offer some advice.

Be prepared to wait, not only to get it to the bottling stage but also then to leave it for a year or so. By that time you will have 3/4 batches ready and you'll start to learn all the tricks ;)

Rather than the usual flavours you can then experiment and you'll have "Elderberry and sock" or "peach and smelly dog"

My uncle used to make loads of wine, all flavours too, don't just stick to the safe red wine, experiment with peach/elderberry/rasperry etc too, the wife will love it ........

but good luck with your venture.............

I used to make white wine when I were a lad, using the kits.

Never progressed to using your own fruit etc.

It tasted alright, I might even look into doing it again.

good luck with it! i used to brew a lot of beer a while back, nothing better than getting pissed up on something youve brewed up yourself, especially when it takes the fuzz off the back of your eyeballs!!

if you are near newton abbot theres a great brewing shop in the entrance to the market there

ok glad the post got some interest.

Will try Newton Chris.

Jase not to keen on the wait. Does it really take that long???

Jim cheers for letting me know you don't like the stuff but i'm sure you could be converted with the right flavour.

Found a few sites so i'm off surfing now oh and also found a wine channel on sky. How cools that 8)
